The Female Persuasion & A Star is Born
A book about feminism, female friendships, growing up in your 20s, becoming a writer and complex relationships between complicated women? If you could draft up a hypothetical book synopsis, this one checks all the boxes. Fortunately, The Female Persuasion is a real book that addresses all of these topics (and more).
An Elton John tribute
Do people know the correct words to Elton John songs? As I was sitting in the audience of his farewell tour concert last week, I began to think about the prominence of Elton John in our pop culture universe and how it's ironic that someone so well-known has songs that are still constantly misheard.
Back to School: Reading Edition
In one of the many romantic exchanges between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in You've Got Mail, Joe Fox writes: "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address." My mom texted me this quote last week and it's been on my mind ever since. It's back-to-school season, and I have books on the brain.
Emmys Recap
In an attempt to increase viewers and avoid football conflicts, NBC (aka Lorne Michaels, who made sure everybody knew the Emmys were all about SNL and the fact that broadcast networks aren't dead) moved the awards show to a Monday night for the first time in five years. It didn't fix the numbers problem, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the Emmys and will pretty much tune in on any night to watch. You can find a compete list of winners here. For the moments you may have missed, you can find a recap of the night's highs and lows.
Veronica Mars & a Fall Pop Culture Preview
After years of waiting, Veronica Mars fans were treated to exciting news. The show is being picked up by Hulu for a revival series, with show creator Rob Thomas (not THAT Rob Thomas) and series star Kristen Bell front and center.
Changing Seasons
There are many reasons I love the show Gilmore Girls, all of which I'm sure I'll get into at some point or another in this newsletter. But for today, I'm just going to focus on one thing: the change of seasons.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before
I'm absolutely giddy to be writing a love letter to a movie that glorifies the love letter. The Netflix romcom that has captured all of our hearts: To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which appeared on the streaming site a few weeks ago and has filled my Twitter feed with Peter Kavinsky gifs ever since.
Dream vacations & summer reading
While on vacation last week, I began imaginary planning trips abroad to Iceland or journeys to the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone. In the meantime, I'll settle for taking some vacations via the movies. Here's a love letter to dream vacations and escapes via the silver screen..
Beach trips & summer sequels
No summer is complete without a trip to the beach. As I keep my fingers crossed for some sunny weather, here are some particularly memorable beach trips from TV and film.
A Trip Through California
Hello all! I took the last two weeks off from newsletter writing to travel across the country to California. It was my first trip West and now I'm ready to write about the many pop culture moments related to The Golden State.
Bring on the Fireworks
Happy Fourth of July! Many have mixed opinions about fireworks, but I've always fallen into the pro-loud, colorful, booming noises camp. From baseball games, to summers at the lake in Wisconsin, to the annual July show in my hometown, fireworks scream summertime. Whether or not you enjoy the experience in real life, the explosives are often used in film and TV, so compiled below, you'll find a list of iconic firework moments in pop culture.
A Wrinkle in Time
After mixed reviews that emphasized that Wrinkle is a children’s movie, I expected to enjoy the film but not love it, but from its first scene Ava DuVernay’s movie consumed me. I read the Wrinkle book series as a child and remembered loving each story, and I watched the made-for-TV movie when it was released in 2003. Years later, I could remember the main plot points without the specifics, but watching this film was like re-discovering the story in a completely new way.
A Felicity Reunion
If you're looking for some late 1990s/early 2000s nostalgia, then enter the world of Felicity, filled with tape recorded messages, frizzy hair and sweaters, whispered phrases, college dorm rooms and Dean & DeLuca.
Father's Day & The Bold Type
This is Us, The Flash, Veronica Mars & more beloved father figures in pop culture.
Younger & SATC’s Anniversary
If you asked me years ago if I'd name a show on TV Land as one of the best of 2018, I’d have laughed in your face. But here we are, and Younger, starring Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff, is entering its fifth season on a network known for I Love Lucy reruns.
What time is it? Summertime Edition
Memorial Day has come and gone and during the holiday weekend I managed to fit in a barbecue, baseball game, poolside lounging and a really bad sunburn, meaning it's officially summertime. This week's newsletter is a love letter to all things SUMMER.
Waitress & Mean Girls
I discovered Sara Bareilles in early high school. I had heard Love Song, of course, but I quickly became obsessed with her second album Kaleidoscope Heart. Through the years, I've followed her projects and progress in the music world, which is why I was so excited to see she was writing the music for Waitress, when it was announced way back in 2013.
