Pop Culture Rundown

It seems like most people I interacted with last week had a rough go of it. For whatever the universe decided, it wasn't going to make things easy for people. Maybe it's because the Fourth of July holiday is close but not quite here yet. Maybe it's because the summer weather has finally arrived and we weren't all prepared for the humidity (or at least our hair wasn't). Whatever it was, some cheering up is in order! I hope I can help with a rundown of pop culture and article recommendations below:

  • I've been switching between excited and terrified for Greta Gerwig's upcoming adaptation of Little Women, which comes out at the end of the year. The new article and photograph spread in Vanity Fair, however, has completely reassured me. I found myself shaking in excitement as I read about how Greta wanted to be Jo when she was younger and gawked at the picture of Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalame as Jo and Laurie, respectively.

  • One day I will finally learn to knit. But until then, I really enjoyed this New York Times article about Dr. Elisabetta Matsumoto, who is working on a five-year project titled What a Tangled Web We Weave to examine the mathematics and physics behind knitting.

  • Big Little Lies season two is back. And while the show won't necessarily cheer you up, it will distract you with dramatic screams from Meryl, over-the-top antics from Laura Dern and plenty of material to let the full cast of Hollywood power ladies shine in the Monterey sun.

  • It's finally here! I've been anticipating the first novel from NPR's Linda Holmes since she announced it, and the book was finally released yesterday. She fittingly does an interview for NPR to discuss the book and her writing process.

  • A fun show that is sure to make your week better is TV Land's Younger, which just returned for its sixth season. If you haven't yet started watching, the show is a delight and gets through a slightly clunky start in season one to become a true ensemble comedy. With a love triangle that is sure to actually cause you to flip sides throughout the seasons, at the center of the show is the friendship between its female characters. Case in point? Sutton Foster, Hilary Duff and Miriam Shor belting out 9 to 5 in the season six premiere.
